1920’s Group Research Project

Directions –

In your small groups please pick one of the topics

below to research and give a presentation. What you choose

today during class cannot be changed! Make sure you circle

your chosen topic! You must submit a list of who is doing what writing and which parts of the project!

Topics –

1. Between 1920 and 1929, automobile registration rose from eight million to twenty-three million. Why do you think production rose so drastically? What effects have automobiles had on the lives of the American people (pollution, gas use, industry, roads and car accidents)? What contribution did Ford make to the automobile industry?

2. How did women’s fashion change in the 1920s? (Where was it before and where did it go afterwards?) Have these styles survived or ever been revived? How do they reflect the new freedoms many women were enjoying in the twenties?

3. In The Great Gatsby there are many references to illegal activity – World Series fixing, bootlegging, police complicity in crime. (Remember our article on organized crime in Chicago!) Research criminal activity in the 1920s, think about politics also as in the Harding Administration Scandal and the Teapot Scandal.

4. Discuss the stock market crash of 1929. Why did it happen, and what was its aftermath? Look for some great sources on Google Scholar! How did it lead to the Great Depression? You might also try looking in your history text book.

5. Research a some of the most prominent literary figures of the 1920’s. Highlight their contributions to American Literature. Some of these writers include but are not limited to F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Weldon Johnson, Ernest Hemingway, Robert Frost, and Zora Neal Hurston.

Requirements –

· Research paper minimum 3 pages, Maximum 5 pages.

· A presentation no longer than 10 minutes on topic. You must use Prezi, Glogster, Moviemaker, Photostory, Blabberize, etc.

· Please let me know ahead of time if you will need something other than the projector such as a TV/VCR for presentation.

Essay: Please write in paragraph form and use correct punctuation. Write at least two body paragraphs. I would like to see an introduction sentence, and thesis at the beginning of the paragraph. At the end you should have a concluding sentence or two in order to wrap up the paper. You may use your vim diagram to assist you! Extra points will be given if you do some prewriting such as a brain storming web or an outline.
